Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo Declares October as Arts & Humanities Month

The Nevada Arts Council and Nevada Humanities are pleased to announce that on Oct. 21, 2024, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo released an official proclamation declaring October as Arts and Humanities Month in Nevada. This proclamation recognizes that the work of the Nevada Humanities and Nevada Arts Council, representing hundreds of cultural organizations across the state, strengthens the lives of families and communities of Nevada. It states that Nevada, through the continued work of the Nevada Arts Council and Nevada Humanities, celebrates “the value and importance of culture in the lives of Nevadans and the health of thriving communities.”

On a national level, President Joe Biden issued a proclamation on Sept. 30, 2024, designating October as National Arts and Humanities Month and building upon the United We Stand Summit. President Biden’s proclamation recognizes the importance of the humanities, arts, and museum and library services in advancing equity, accessibility, and opportunities for all Americans across the country, uniting Americans through the cultural awareness and connectivity found through the arts and the humanities. President Biden’s National Arts and Humanities Month proclamation is available at neh.gov.

In celebration of Arts and Humanities Month, both the Nevada Arts Council and Nevada Humanities hold and support various events across the state that celebrate the arts and humanities.

Nevada Arts Council-supported programs and events in October include the Nevada Roadsides: Northern Routes Exhibition presented by Capital City Arts Initiatives, the Goldwell Open Air Museum’s 40th Anniversary Celebration, and its three Nevada Touring Initiative exhibits on display throughout Nevada. A complete listing can be found on the Nevada Arts Council website at nvartscouncil.org and on its calendar of events at nvartscouncil.org/events.

A full listing of Nevada Humanities programs and events in October, which includes the Las Vegas Writes Volume 15 Book Launch and Conversation with the Authors event; the 2024 Robert Laxalt Distinguished Writer’s program; the Las Vegas Book Festival; and Celebrating Ancestry: Poetry for the Day of the Dead event, part of the Latino Poetry: Places We Call Home major national humanities initiative, and other events organized and hosted by grantee organizations can be found on the Nevada Humanities website at nevadahumanities.org and on its calendar of events at nevadahumanities.org/calendar.

“National Arts and Humanities Month shines a month-long spotlight on the creative expression, therapeutic benefits, connection and reflection, perspective and empathy, and resilience that arts and humanities offer Nevadans year-round,” said Tony Manfredi, executive director of the Nevada Arts Council. “The Nevada Arts Council, through its grant and program services, ensures that arts and creativity strengthen the economic vitality, cultural development, quality of life, health, and educational experiences of Nevada residents while providing authentic cultural tourism experiences for those worldwide.”

“Arts and Humanities Month in Nevada highlights how important the arts and humanities are to Nevadans across the state. The humanities are key to how we share our stories and identities,” said Christina Barr, executive director of Nevada Humanities. “Nevada Humanities’ programs amplify the stories, experiences, and creative expressions of Nevadans, bringing our humanity to the forefront of the Nevada experience. This is critical for nurturing a vibrant, resilient quality of life within the Silver State, and also for visitors who come to Nevada seeking experiences that are uniquely found here.”

Arts and Humanities Month in Nevada and National Arts & Humanities Month are celebrated every October and recognize the importance of culture and the arts in creating and sustaining healthy communities, uplifting individuals’ well-being, upholding a viable democracy, and connecting cultures across the country.
