Release: Shaun Griffin Reappointed as Nevada Poet Laureate

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026

Second term will continue statewide poetry outreach in correctional facilities into 2028

RENO, Nevada (Aug. 19, 2026) – Nevada Poet Laureate Shaun Griffin has been reappointed by Gov. Joe Lombardo to continue advancing his literary initiative, bringing poetry education and instruction throughout the state. Griffin was first appointed in May 2024 through the Nevada Arts Council’s selection process, which identifies qualified candidates for gubernatorial review and appointment. Griffin’s reappointment through 2028 recognizes the reach of his work during his first term while providing continuity that ensures his project is implemented in all nine Nevada Department of Corrections facilities by the conclusion of his appointment.

During his first term, Griffin participated in readings, workshops, public conversations and educational programs throughout Nevada. He also advanced an initiative to expand creative writing opportunities within Nevada’s correctional facilities, modeled after the Razor Wire poetry workshop he has led at Northern Nevada Correctional Center since 1989. Griffin works toward that goal as a volunteer with the Nevada Prison Education Project, a nonprofit that works to provide expansive access to higher education for people who are currently or formerly incarcerated.

“Shaun’s reappointment reflects both the impact of his first term and the importance of the work still ahead,” said Tony Manfredi, executive director of the Nevada Arts Council. “A second term will allow him to deepen partnerships, expand access and reach more Nevadans through the power of poetry.”

The Nevada State Poet Laureate promotes poetry, literacy and learning through appearances, readings, workshops and a significant cultural project. The position includes a $5,000 annual honorarium to support statewide programming and travel associated with public appearances.

“Poetry is the one thing that moves without a whisper into the deepest parts of our existence. I am thrilled to be advocating for its presence throughout Nevada’s schools, libraries, communities, and prisons, where it has repeatedly changed men’s lives,” Griffin said. “My deep thanks to Governor Lombardo, the Nevada Arts Council, and the many wonderful literary ambassadors in this state for this second poet laureate appointment.”

Griffin has spent decades expanding access to education and the arts, including co-founding the nonprofit, Community Chest, and leading statewide efforts for unhoused children and youth. He is the author of seven poetry collections and a member of the Nevada Writers Hall of Fame, with honors including the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and the Mike O’Callaghan Humanitarian Award.
