ROAD MAPS WORKSHOP: Equity and Engagement in the Arts with Theresa Hwang
Learn how equitable outcomes can be incorporated into arts and culture projects through a series of case studies and hands-on activities. We will discuss shared definitions of equity and engagement, positionality and privilege, and how these concepts can be leveraged and applied in the field of arts, design, and creative placemaking. Participants will think through existing projects that they are currently working on and look for opportunities to incorporate new engagement strategies.

Theresa Hwang is a community-engaged architect, educator, and facilitator. She is the founder of Department of Places, a participatory design and community engagement practice based in Los Angeles, CA. Hwang has spent over 13 years focused on equitable cultural and community development with multiple groups and campaigns. Her work has been featured in Architectural Record, The New York Times, Atlantic Cities, Al-Jazeera America and other media outlets. She was recognized as one of Next City’s Urban Vanguards 2015, and holds a Master in Architecture from Harvard Graduate School of Design. Download workshop flyer.

Road Maps is an ongoing workshop series aimed at strengthening and elevating northern Nevada’s arts and culture sector. Through topic-specific workshops, arts and culture leaders will gain a comprehensive set of tools, skills, and guidelines to help maximize their community impact. Series co- presented by the City of Reno, City of Sparks, Reno Arts Consortium, Sierra Arts Foundation, Nevada Arts Council, Nevada Humanities, and Washoe County.
