SHOWCASED AT LEGISLATIVE EXHIBITION GALLERY
It took Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay three years to complete the paintings for her exhibit, “The Beauty Within,” but the visions of them began much, much earlier. She grew up on a small farm in the Mojave Desert, making mud pies and chasing lizards. When her older sister would visit from Los Angeles, it exposed her to a different world.
“She smelled amazing, not like dust, and her clothes were always so fashionable,” Develay said. “I came to be fascinated with the way clothes define us, the politics behind them, how we choose to dress to influence the world’s perception of us. The clothes in these paintings represent the ultimate desire. For me, they are status symbols of success.”
Develay’s paintings are the latest works from Nevada artists to go on display at the Nevada Arts Council’s Legislative Exhibition Series (LXS) inside the Nevada Legislature building and will be featured from April 29 through May 17. She is the fifth of six Nevadans whose artwork is being displayed during this legislative session.
Develay has a Masters of Fine Arts from UNLV and currently works as an interconnection specialist at Tesla in Las Vegas. She is an adjunct professor of Fine Art at the College of Southern Nevada. Her work has been exhibited in numerous galleries in Las Vegas, including the Priscilla Fowler Fine Art Gallery, Donna Beam Gallery, Left of Center and College of Southern Nevada. Read more
