Arts & Health
Creative learning opportunities and experiences can change lives by improving health and well-being. That is the guiding principle behind our Arts & Health programs.
Creating and enjoying art allows us to express ourselves and connect with others. These experiences support healing, recovery, and stress relief. For those dealing with illnesses or injury, older adults, and veterans, it can be particularly impactful. These are just some of the ways the arts support our health and well-being:
- Research shows that from early childhood through adolescence and youth, arts education can help students better cope with their feelings, bounce back from adversity, and show tolerance and compassion for others.
- In various studies of older adults, arts participation has been linked to positive health outcomes such as reduced rates of cognitive decline and improved mood, communication, and flexibility among patients with Alzheimer’s disease or other neurodegenerative disorders.
- Arts and health programs, including art therapy, music therapy, and dance/movement therapy, help to address specific physical and mental health conditions and enhance the quality of life for patients and their caregivers.
Creative Aging
Research shows that creativity is good for both the mind and body as we age. That’s why our Creative Aging program supports art classes, workshops, and other art activities for older Nevadans. Our goal is to improve their quality of life through the power of the arts
Veterans Initiatives
In partnership with veterans organizations, the Nevada Arts Council brings classes in memoir writing, guitar playing, and visual art into veteran centers, medical facilities, and nonprofit groups.
