Joan Paye is a dynamic and inspiring social practice teaching artist with a passion for connecting creativity and community. As the founder of Art Barn Workshop, Paye has facilitated over 50 creativity workshops since 2017, blending her corporate marketing and project management expertise with her deep love for the arts. Her unique approach draws on her work with global brands like HBO, Microsoft, and Time Warner, bringing creativity, play, and mindfulness into both corporate and community settings. In 2024, Paye led three public art workshops and installations, continuing to expand her reach and impact.

Certified as an interpretive guide through the National Association for Interpretation, she blends artistic practice with educational leadership, offering programs that connect people to their natural and creative worlds. Inspired by Julia Cameron’s "The Artist’s Way," Paye is deeply committed to helping others reclaim their creative gifts, just as she did in her own life.

Paye's artistic focus is on nature journaling, where she combines creativity, observation, and play with mindfulness and spiritual exploration. Through this practice, she encourages others to slow down, unplug, and embrace the beauty of the world around them—without judgment and with a sense of wonder.

When she’s not teaching, Paye can be found exploring the Southwest in her trusty pop-up camper, Rosie, named after her childhood horse. A proud member of Sisters on the Fly, an outdoor adventure group for women, she enjoys hiking under the expansive desert skies and volunteering with the US Forest Service at Spring Mountain Visitors Gateway. For her, it’s all about being present, finding joy in every moment, and sharing those experiences with others in community.

School & community workshops

Fundamentals of Nature Journaling
This workshop series combines art, science, and nature exploration, encouraging Explorers to observe and document the natural world through sketching, painting, and writing. Discover techniques for observing and capturing details in nature, such as plants, animals, and landscapes, while developing a deeper understanding. Emphasis is placed on mindfulness, creativity, and enhancing observational skills. The course includes outdoor sessions, offering direct interaction with nature to inspire unique, personal journaling. All skill levels are welcome, as both artistic and journaling techniques will be taught in a supportive, relaxed environment.

Community Public Art Workshops
Join us for a collaborative art workshop led by a traveling social practice artist, where we’ll come together to craft meaningful artwork inspired by the unique stories and environment of your community. Through collective creativity, we’ll explore local narratives and transform them into a shared expression that fosters pride and connection among both makers and visitors. Using materials sourced from the surrounding area, we’ll embrace the beauty of what’s available to create a vision of the world we imagine.
