Breaking Ground at Donovan Mill
October 6 @ 7:30 pm - 10:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 7:30 pm on Sunday, Friday and Saturday, repeating until October 6, 2024
The Breaking Ground art installation is a captivating photo-phonic experience that merges documentary photography and sound to reflect on the cyclical nature of industry. Valery Lyman’s work, recorded over four years in North Dakota’s Bakken oilfields, features more than 700 photographs projected onto the industrial structures of the Donovan Mill. Accompanied by audio recordings from workers and ambient sounds, the installation blends the past with the present, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in America’s industrial legacy. This installation encourages exploration and reflection, offering a sensory journey through the voices and landscapes of blue-collar workers that built the nation’s industrial history.
Set against the backdrop of the historic Donovan Mill, the installation not only evokes the memory of those who once worked there but also connects to the broader story of American industry, including Nevada’s significant role in silver production. Visitors will walk among the projections, experiencing a deep connection between the physical site and the imagery, making history come alive in a powerful, multi-dimensional way.
Join us in experiencing this unique connection to America’s industrial history. Admission is free, donations are welcome, and sponsorships are available to support this powerful event and historic preservation.
